But with Trump\u2019s public support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/02\/22\/trumps-approval-rating-state-union-tariffs\/88810665007\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cratering<\/a> to levels not seen since he encouraged a mob of his supporters to sack the U.S. Capitol in 2021, the tide may be starting to turn.<\/p><p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116111073840858395\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">demanded<\/a> in a Saturday social media post that Netflix \u201cIMMEDIATELY\u201d fire Susan Rice, who <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.netflix.net\/governance\/Leadership-and-directors\/person-details\/default.aspx?ItemId=98b65d4c-809b-4874-8b7e-f4ae98e04086\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">served<\/a> in senior posts in the Obama and Biden administrations, from its board of directors \u2014 or face unnamed \u201cconsequences.\u201d At issue were comments Rice made on a podcast last week about future accountability for corporations that violate the law on Trump\u2019s behalf, which MAGA media figures denounced as a sign that \u201cDemocrats are out for blood\u201d and plotting \u201cretribution.\u201d<\/p><p>Though the president did not detail the \u201cconsequences\u201d Netflix would suffer for failing to bow to his whim, he was responding to an ally who urged him to \u201ckill the Netflix-Warner Bros. merger now.\u201d Trump actually cannot unilaterally cancel Netflix\u2019s bid to take over Warner\u2019s theatrical and streaming assets \u2014 but his administration can force it into expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/media\/justice-department-casts-wide-net-on-netflixs-business-practices-in-merger-probe-fd30d7f8?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/2026\/02\/23\/doj-netflix-filmmakers-warner-deal-review\/88821937007\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">court<\/a> battles. <\/p><p>And Warner Bros. could, in turn, decide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/cnn\/paramount-mangling-cbs-and-cnn-may-be-next\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pull out of their deal<\/a> rather than face that scrutiny, leaving a potential acquisition open to rival bidder Paramount. That would surely be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/cbs\/year-media-oligarchs-bowed-trump#paragraph--narrative-item--3475564\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">preferred result<\/a> for Trump, and could place Warner Bros.\u2019 CNN subsidiary in the hands of Paramount\u2019s owner David Ellison, a Trump supporter whose right-skewed stewardship of CBS News has drawn praise from the president. Ellison\u2019s father, Larry Ellison, a megabillionaire and Trump ally, has reportedly already discussed with the White House which CNN hosts could be fired under their leadership.<\/p><p>But Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, thus far, has refused to cave to Trump\u2019s pressure. \u201cThis is a business deal. It&#8217;s not a political deal,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/tv\/news\/ted-sarandos-responds-donald-trump-fire-susan-rice-1236670063\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the BBC on Monday. \u201cThis deal is run by the Department of Justice in the U.S. and regulators throughout Europe and around the world.\u201d <\/p><p>Sarandos defended the merger on its merits and minimized the import of the president\u2019s comments, saying, \u201cHe likes to do a lot of things on social media.\u201d<\/p><p>While Sarandos could still reverse himself and capitulate to Trump \u2014 or Warner Bros. could fold and switch to Paramount\u2019s bid \u2014 the Netflix head\u2019s public comments nonetheless stand out when compared to the behavior of media moguls like Jeff Bezos or Bob Iger. As we learned in Trump\u2019s first term, corporate media leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/msnbc\/trump-threatening-use-government-come-down-hard-free-press-believe-him\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">can defeat<\/a> Trump\u2019s authoritarian tactics \u2014 but only if they are willing to stand up to him.<\/p><h4>How the right-wing freakout over Susan Rice\u2019s remarks reached Trump<\/h4><p>Rice, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/donald-trump-susan-rice-netflix-full-comments-2026-2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Thursday<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/5748439-susan-rice-trump-corporations-accountability\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a>, pilloried law firms, media outlets, corporations, and others that have decided to act \u201cin their perceived very narrow self-interest\u201d to \u201ctake a knee\u201d for Trump during his second term. She repeatedly warned that if those entities violated the law, they would be \u201cheld accountable\u201d when Democrats come back into power.<\/p><p>\u201cIf these corporations think that the Democrats, when they come back in power, are going to, you know, play by the old rules, and say, \u2018Oh, never mind, we\u2019ll forgive you for all the people you fired, all the policies and principles you\u2019ve violated, all, you know, the laws you\u2019ve skirted,\u2019 I think they\u2019ve got another thing coming,\u201d she told former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.<\/p><p>\u201cYou know, companies already are starting to hear they better preserve their documents,\u201d she added. \u201cThey better be ready for subpoenas. If they\u2019ve done something wrong, they\u2019ll be held accountable, and if they haven\u2019t broken the law, good for them.\u201d<\/p><p>Right-wing media figures quickly seized on Rice\u2019s comments, downplaying or ignoring the portions of her remarks in which she made clear that she was referring to entities that had broken the law in order to portray her as committing the Democrats to a campaign of retribution.<\/p><p>\u201cDemocrats are out for blood,\u201d Fox News host Jesse Watters said Friday on <em>The Five<\/em>. \u201cFormer Obama lackey, Susan Rice, making it clear they want scalps if the Democrats take back power in the Midterms.<\/p><p>His co-host, Greg Gutfeld, added that what Rice was \u201csaying is we&#8217;ll destroy you when we come back unless you are obedient to us and do not play along,\u201d adding that her remarks were \u201cvery anti-American.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"rm-embed embed-media\"><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/media\/4037751\/embed\/embed\" width=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/div><p><em>Fox &amp; Friends Weekend<\/em> co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy, the wife of Transportation Secretary and former Fox host Sean Duffy, interviewed Fox host Lara Trump, the president\u2019s daughter-in-law, about Rice\u2019s comments Saturday morning.<\/p><p>\u201cLara, I mean, they are vindictive,\u201d Campos-Duffy began. \u201cThey are mad that anyone would dare to work with President Trump in his administration, and basically they&#8217;re saying paybacks are a you-know-what.\u201d<\/p><p>Lara Trump, with a smirk, described Rice\u2019s comments as \u201cstraight out of the authoritarian playbook\u201d to \u201cintimidate and threaten your political opponents.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so amazing to see that these people are the ones who call President Trump a fascist. That is the behavior they\u2019re displaying with this sort of thing,\u201d she later added. \u201cAnd don\u2019t forget, President Trump always said, he said during the campaign and you\u2019ve seen it as proof when he\u2019s now been back in office, \u2018My revenge will be success, success for this country.\u2019 What a great statement, and maybe the Democrats want to pay attention to that.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"rm-embed embed-media\"><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/media\/4037756\/embed\/embed\" width=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/div><p>In reality, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/usa-trump-retribution-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> \u201cat least 470 targets of retribution under Trump\u2019s leadership \u2013 from federal employees and prosecutors to universities and media outlets\u201d in a November report. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/list-individuals-including-lisa-cook-targeted-trump-administration\/story?id=124968309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a dozen of Trump\u2019s political adversaries<\/a> have faced criminal investigations, with prosecutors seeking federal charges in many of those cases. Trump himself has personally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/10\/trump-doj-prosecutions-comey-james-00601838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered<\/a> such prosecutions, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/the-lede\/donald-trumps-firing-of-a-federal-prosecutor-crosses-the-reddest-of-lines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replaced prosecutors<\/a> who refused to file the charges he has demanded.<\/p><p>Later on Saturday, Laura Loomer, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/laura-loomer\/why-maga-movement-cant-cut-loose-toxic-liabilities-tucker-carlson-and-laura-loomer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deranged bigot<\/a> who wields a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamatters.org\/laura-loomer\/trumps-decision-upend-his-national-security-team-behest-conspiracy-theorist-laura\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">disturbing amount of influence<\/a> over the president and his administration, weighed in \u2014 and tied Rice\u2019s remarks back to Netflix and its bid for Warner Bros. <\/p><p>\u201cDoes Netflix stand by their Board Member threatening half of the country with weaponized government and political retribution for choosing who they wanted to vote for as President?\u201d she asked. \u201cThis is as anti-American as it gets, and Netflix is proving everyday they are an anti-American, WOKE company.\u201d <\/p><p>Loomer added that Rice\u2019s remarks are \u201cmore horrifying\u201d because \u201cif the Netflix-Warner Bros. merger is approved, positive messaging of the Democrats&#8217; upcoming witch hunts against Trump \u2026 would likely be blasted across all streaming services.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cPresident Trump @POTUS must kill the Netflix-Warner Bros. merger now,\u201d she concluded, adding the handle of Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr.<\/p><p>Loomer\u2019s diatribe drew support from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), the chairman of the Senate\u2019s Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/2026\/2\/we-interrupt-this-program-media-ownership-in-the-digital-age\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">oversees<\/a> the FCC.
