Scott Applewhite<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-poll-56-doubt-white-houses-competence-managing-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest Fox News poll<\/a> revealed grim numbers for Republicans on the economy &#8212; an issue that had long been a strength for them &#8212; in what is yet another alarm bell for the GOP as the midterm elections loom.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/tv\/fox-host-bluntly-draws-grim-conclusion-from-recent-trump-polls-people-are-not-confident-that-our-government-is-competent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polling numbers<\/a> for President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> and Republicans have been brutal as his second term has progressed, with his immigration crackdown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/stunning-new-poll-shows-support-for-trump-immigration-crackdown-has-cratered-especially-among-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cratering<\/a> his support, the handling of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/trump\/trump-claims-the-epstein-story-has-boosted-his-approval-rating-to-best-numbers-ive-ever-had\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epstein files<\/a> getting abysmal marks, and even Americans&#8217; views on his handling of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/shock-poll-majority-believe-trump-has-hurt-economy-just-2-in-10-say-hes-helped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">economy<\/a> taking body blows.<\/p>\n<p>The Fox News survey was <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fox_april-17-20-2026_national_topline_april-22-release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conducted<\/a> April 17 through 20 from a sample of 1,001 registered U.S. voters nationwide, and included live telephone calls on landlines and cell phones as well as online surveys completed from a link sent by text message. The full sample has a margin of error of +\/- 3 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>The partisan breakdown of the poll respondents&#8217; political identification was 42 percent Democrat (32% solid D, 10% lean D), 43 percent Republican (35% solid R, 8% lean R), and 16% independent.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-poll-56-doubt-white-houses-competence-managing-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> about the poll on FoxNews.com noted, Trump &#8220;receives negative job ratings for his handling of immigration (46% approve, 54% disapprove), China (42-57), foreign policy (40-60), Iran (37-63), the economy (34-66), government spending (33-67), and inflation (28-72),&#8221; and &#8220;[h]is only positive rating is on border security (53-47).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The survey responses about the economy drew attention, especially the question that asked voters, &#8220;Which political party &#8212; the Democrats or the Republicans &#8212; do you think would do a better job on the economy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-two percent said Democrats and 48 percent said Republicans &#8212; the first time Americans have preferred Democrats on this issue since 2010, during President <strong>Barack Obama&#8217;s<\/strong> first term and in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed_container\" id=\"9a9de1fd90ccd493251b25054a9d981c\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fox News poll shows Americans prefer Democrats to Republicans on the economy (D+4) for the first time since 2010. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0x7It7yrNg\">pic.twitter.com\/0x7It7yrNg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aaron Blake (@AaronBlake) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AaronBlake\/status\/2047288695913349126?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">April 23, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/div>\n<p>The past historical tracking of this question shows that Republicans were favored by as much as 15 points in 2022 and 2023, showing the dissatisfaction with the economy during President <strong>Joe Biden&#8217;s<\/strong> term that helped pave the way for Trump&#8217;s return to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The survey asked more <a href=\"https:\/\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/fox_april-17-20-2026_national_cross-tabs_april-22-release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed economic questions<\/a> that illustrated how very unhappy Americans are about the economy right now.<\/p>\n<p>When asked to rate their &#8220;personal financial situation,&#8221; only 10% said excellent, 30% said good, 32% fair, and 28% poor.
