Since I could only kick it lousily as a kid, the best I could do was watch it, which there was plenty of in New York City during the Sixties and Seventies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were the New York Skyliners, actually the Cerro club of Montevideo, Uruguay, one of the entire teams imported lock, stock, and shin guards from Europe and South America to populate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-38904513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Soccer Association<\/a> (think of the initials). The rival and homegrown National Professional Soccer League featured the New York Generals playing teams such as the Tampa Bay Rowdies, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rowdiessoccer.com\/news\/2024\/11\/21\/how-the-rowdies-got-their-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memorable slogan<\/a> was \u201cSoccer is a kick in the grass.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<span id=\"more-456078\"><\/span>\n\n\n\n<p>Fan interest slacked off after the 1967 season when the two struggling leagues merged to form a single\u00a0 struggling North American Soccer League. But in 1975, the circuit received a power surge when its New York Cosmos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/story\/_\/id\/37635133\/when-pele-ruled-soccer-us-new-york-cosmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed Brazil\u2019s Pele<\/a>, as well as other iconic internationals. Giants Stadium in New Jersey teemed with upwards of 75,000 <em>futbolistas <\/em>cheering on the all-universe-stars, even though they were well past their playing primes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bad economics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasl.com\/a-review-of-the-golden-era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed the NASL<\/a> in 1985. But it had become clear that, given responsible ownership and financial management, a U.S. professional league was viable, enticing Americans to at long last embrace the worldwide sport. And three years later, world soccer\u2019s governing body, known as FIFA, endorsed that proposition by declaring the U.S. would host the world\u2019s premier single-sport event \u2014 the men\u2019s World Cup soccer tournament \u2014\u00a0in 1994. <em>Ol\u00e9, ol\u00e9, ol\u00e9, ol\u00e9!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five games, and the opening ceremony, were scheduled for Chicago, down the road from Des Moines. How could this longtime <em>futbol <\/em>fan not go?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I didn\u2019t, for three reasons: my 3-year-old twins, and my responsibility as a parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when FIFA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ussoccer.com\/stories\/2018\/06\/united-bid-selected-to-host-the-2026-fifa-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> June 13, 2018, that soccer\u2019s quadrennial mega-event would be played in Canada, Mexico, and the U-S-of-A \u2014\u00a0including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/tournaments\/mens\/worldcup\/canadamexicousa2026\/usa\/kansas-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kansas City<\/a>, a mere jaunt down I-35! \u2014 and with our twins now married and gainfully employed, my wife and I determinedly decided:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We! Are! Going!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We. Are. Not. Sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because FIFA, individual host city committees, and the Trump administration have combined to do everything to poop a month-and-a-half-long party:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tickets, as sold by FIFA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7166874\/2026\/04\/02\/fifa-dynamic-pricing-2026-world-cup-tickets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">begin at $450<\/a> for satellite-orbital-elevation seats. Want to attend the final, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey? Try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7165327\/2026\/04\/01\/fifa-world-cup-ticket-prices-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$10,000<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Jersey Transit, which normally charges $13 for a round-trip to that stadium from midtown Manhattan, announced a hike to $150 for World Cup games. After a huge outcry against the gouge,\u00a0 they lowered that to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/nj-transit-reduces-world-cup-train-ticket-prices-backlash-citing-monetary-support-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$105<\/a>. That\u2019s still the equivalent of five beers, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6455861\/2025\/07\/01\/club-world-cup-food-drink-prices-stadiums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$19.49 a pop<\/a>. Of course you could ride a shuttle bus from various locations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/prices-for-world-cup-public-transportation-range-from-free-to-150-heres-whats-going-on-4e379437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for $80<\/a>. But you\u2019ll still save a few bucks, since parking will run you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7070786\/2026\/02\/26\/fifa-world-cup-parking-prices-ada-disabled-spots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an average $175<\/a> per stadium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need a hotel room? If you don\u2019t want to drive 25 miles or more to the game, prepare to pay <a href=\"http:\/\/hotels.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$400\u2013$1,200 \u2014 a night!<\/a> \u2014 according to Hotels.com.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stateside games will be held in converted American football stadiums. But at least one will ban a great American football tradition: <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonfwc26.com\/the-stadium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tailgating is <em>verboten<\/em> at Gillette Stadium<\/a> in Foxboro, Mass. (Security, you know.) Other host cities have yet to decide to follow suit.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But fear not about security; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7038337\/2026\/02\/11\/world-cup-usa-ice-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ckey part\u201d of it<\/a> will be provided by those madcap masked men from ICE who brought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/ng-interactive\/2026\/jan\/04\/ice-2025-deaths-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state-sponsored violence,<\/a> detention, and deportation to U.S. city after city in 2025.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There could be possible disruptions resulting from labor strife and official protests. In Los Angeles, SoFi Stadium workers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/world-at-work\/sofi-stadium-workers-urge-fifa-bar-ice-world-cup-threaten-strike-2026-04-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatening to strike<\/a> because of ICE\u2019s presence. In Houston, which will host seven matches, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a staunch Trump supporter, has threatened to withhold public safety funds because the city council has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/04\/15\/texas-houston-police-ice-city-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered police to minimize cooperation<\/a> with federal immigration authorities.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And, finally, fans wanting to follow some national teams to America will be entering a country facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2026\/03\/global-fifa-and-world-cup-hosts-must-prevent-tournament-becoming-a-threat-to-fans-and-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201chuman rights emergency<\/a>,\u201d according to Amnesty International. If you\u2019re from Egypt, Ghana, Jordan, Morocco, Uruguay, or Uzbekistan, ICE will be watching you. Closely. If you\u2019re from Algeria or Cape Verde, you\u2019ll have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/articles\/the-u-s-is-co-hosting-the-world-cup-but-much-of-the-world-cant-attend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pay a $15,000 \u201cbond\u201d<\/a> \u2014 some might call it a bribe \u2014\u00a0to enter the U.S. And if you\u2019re from Haiti, Iran, the Ivory Coast, or Senegal, forget it: Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/articles\/the-u-s-is-co-hosting-the-world-cup-but-much-of-the-world-cant-attend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closed the U.S. border<\/a> to you and your countrymen.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[T]he World Cup thrives because soccer is the people\u2019s game \u2014 played around the world, with low barriers to entry. \u2026\u201d sports columnist Jason Gay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/sports\/soccer\/world-cup-train-metlife-stadium-nj-transit-8ed6d478?mod=Searchresults&amp;pos=1&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes in The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cThese Cups are massive opportunities to grow the sport, to cultivate new and young fans. Instead this North American one is becoming a plutocrat\u2019s picnic. \u2026\u201d And this is in a newspaper that gleefully wallows in celebrating capitalism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Predictably, reaction from the left has been harsher. \u201cFor Trump and his administration, the World Cup is an opportunity not so much to launder his unsavory reputation as to embrace it: to take center stage as a global strongman,\u201d Alex Shephard <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/209225\/trump-infantino-fifa-broken-2026-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a piece in The New Republic titled \u201cTrump and FIFA Have Already Broken the 2026 World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gratefully, no such stress seems to be coming out of Kansas City, the only host community in the Midwest. And this is probably the last time America will host the World Cup during Lisa\u2019s and my lifetimes. So, at this point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We! Are! Going!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have constructed a three-part strategy, which I offer as a public service:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019d love to see Messi and Argentina live, but we don\u2019t want to take out a second mortgage. So we\u2019ll focus on a less attractive contest.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We will count on what seems to be the golden rule of the secondary ticket market: Prices <a href=\"https:\/\/seatgeek.com\/blog\/when-to-buy-tickets-the-best-times-to-score-a-deal-on-seatgeek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">usually drop the closer you get to match time<\/a>, as speculators try to get at least some ROI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We\u2019ll avoid penthouse hotel rates by booking at one of the many motels halfway between our home and the KC metro.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It certainly seems that FIFA, the Trump administration, and some of the host city committees are combining to dump acid rain on one of the world\u2019s premier picnics. But the FIFA Men\u2019s World Cup tournament is without a doubt <em>numero uno <\/em>on the bucket list for every <em>futbol<\/em> fan who has always had to experience the enjoyment from their dens. So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We! Are!
