{"id":2456,"date":"2026-05-20T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T15:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wokeantifa.org\/topics\/economic-pessimism-deepens-as-war-with-iran-pushes-gas-prices-higher\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T15:28:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T15:28:00","slug":"economic-pessimism-deepens-as-war-with-iran-pushes-gas-prices-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wokeantifa.org\/topics\/economic-pessimism-deepens-as-war-with-iran-pushes-gas-prices-higher\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic Pessimism Deepens as War With Iran Pushes Gas Prices Higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><p class=\"\">At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2025\/1\/20\/economic-pessimism-persists-after-one-year-of-trumps-second-term-but-voters-still-dont-think-either-party-has-a-solution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>beginning of 2026<\/span><\/a>, Data for Progress\u2019 polling revealed that voters have remained pessimistic about the economy since Donald Trump took office, despite his campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/doggett.house.gov\/issues\/trumps-economic-promises-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>promise<\/span><\/a> to \u201cmake America affordable again.\u201d Since then, Trump has launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2026\/3\/19\/voters-strongly-oppose-boots-on-the-ground-in-iran-think-the-war-is-not-worth-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>unpopular war<\/span><\/a> that has created a surge in gas prices across the country, while continuing to defend his illegal and expensive tariff policy.&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"\">In a new <a href=\"http:\/\/filesforprogress.org\/datasets\/2026\/5\/dfp_economic_outlook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>survey<\/span><\/a> weighted to a likely 2026 midterm electorate, Data for Progress finds that voters report worsening conditions across most aspects of the economy in recent months, as well as sharp increases in spending on gas.<\/p><p class=\"\">When asked whether they&#8217;ve paid more, about the same, or less for various goods over the past year, an overwhelming majority of voters have consistently reported paying more for groceries and food. Consistently, voters strongly agree that the cost of goods and services is getting worse, with a slight jump from 70% of voters in January 2025 to 74% of voters in May 2026.<\/p><p class=\"\">The survey also finds a significant uptick in the percentage of voters who say \u201cthe economy in general\u201d is getting worse.
