Republican efforts to rig<\/a> the 2026 midterm elections by further gerrymandering<\/a> House districts at the behest of President Donald Trump were dealt two massive blows on Tuesday.<\/p> In Alabama, a panel of three federal judges\u2014two of whom were appointed by Trump\u2014blocked<\/a> the state from using a map that would eliminate one of the state\u2019s two majority-Black districts. The panel ruled that the new map illegally discriminates against Black voters\u2014despite the Supreme Court\u2019s recent ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act<\/a>\u2014and that it cannot be used in 2026. <\/p> In South Carolina, the state Senate rejected Trump\u2019s demand that the state eliminate its one majority-Black congressional seat, which is held by longtime Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn.<\/p> For now, these actions undercut Republican efforts to fight off an impending blue wave this fall. <\/p> In Alabama, the three-judge panel wrote in their decision<\/a>, \u201cUltimately, we cannot see our way clear to requiring Alabamians to cast their votes in the 2026 elections under a districting plan tainted by intentional race-based discrimination.\u201d<\/p> The ruling continued, \u201cAnd under the unusual circumstances of this case, we conclude that a limited order requiring the Secretary to continue using this Court\u2019s race-blind map will not disrupt Alabama\u2019s elections (all candidates ran under the race-blind map until fifteen days ago, and all voters remain districted under the race-blind map in electoral computer systems).\u201d<\/p> Alabama is already appealing<\/a> the ruling to the Supreme Court, which has regularly helped stack the deck<\/a> in favor of Trump<\/a> and his Republican Party. It is entirely possible the nation\u2019s highest court, filled with right-wing hacks, will reinstate Alabama\u2019s racist map.<\/p> \u201c[I]n my mind, it is not a matter of whether we win this case, only when,\u201d Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, a Republican, said<\/a> in a statement, telegraphing that he expects the partisan court majority to bless his state\u2019s redraw. <\/p> At the moment, however, that represents one fewer seat rigged in favor of Republicans as they desperately try to maintain their narrow House majority.<\/p> Meanwhile, South Carolina will officially keep its one Black-majority district after a redraw failed by a vote of 20-24<\/a> in the state Senate, with 12 Republicans voting against it.<\/p> One Republican who voted against it was conservative Sen. Richard Cash, who said his vote was because voting had already begun in the state\u2019s June 9 primary.<\/p> \u201cNeither my conscience nor the common sense will allow me to stop an election that is already underway,\u201d Cash said<\/a> on the Senate floor.<\/p> Democrats taunted Republicans after the GOP\u2019s two election-rigging attempts failed.<\/p> \u201cDonald Trump and extreme MAGA Republicans have failed the American people.
