On International Domestic Workers Day, we are shining a light on Kenyan migrant domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. They, and 1.2 million more migrant women employed there as domestic workers, continue to face abuse, exploitation and a lack of meaningful protection under the law.

Russia\u2019s drone and missile strikes on Dnipro, Ukraine are the latest in a series of attacks on the country amid Russia's ongoing war of aggression. The strikes, which happened earlier today, injured at least 18 people. Among them were children. The attacks hit civilian buildings and set them alight, causing firefighters to attend the scene.
\n
\nLast week, Russia carried out one of its largest aerial attacks yet on Ukraine, involving over 1,500 long-range drones and missiles. In Kyiv alone, one Russian strike on a residential building killed at least 24 people including children, as rescuers cleared the rubble. Across the city, dozens of civilians were injured and residential buildings were damaged. Earlier that day, other Ukrainian cities, including Rivne and Ivano-Frankivsk, were also under attack, with civilians killed and injured there as well.

\nA UN vehicle carrying aid to Ukraine\u2019s southern city of Kherson was also struck last week, followed by another hit while the delivery was underway.

\nAmnesty International has documented numerous war crimes and other crimes under international law committed by Russian forces since the beginning of its war of aggression against Ukraine. This includes deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. These are crimes under international law. Russia\u2019s aggression must be stopped, and civilians in Ukraine must be protected.<\/p>\n \n

Executions in 2025 soared to the highest figure recorded by Amnesty International since 1981. Iran was the main driver behind the spike, doubling its 2024 figure, a dangerous trend as the authorities used the death penalty to instil fear and punish dissent.
\nThe top five countries are: China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the United States.
\n
\nThe authorities of several countries placed the death penalty at the centre of flawed public security and \u201ctough on crime\u201d narratives to assert control, project state power and score political points \u2013 rather than deterring crime, authorities weaponize the death penalty to criminalize protest and dissent to show the strong hand of the state instead.
\nMeanwhile, countries that do move towards abolition often show a powerful demonstration of shared humanity. It\u2019s time for countries that still retain the death penalty to step into line with the rest of the world and leave this abhorrent practice in the past.
\n
\nThe year 2025 saw a significant rise in prison executions, with a 78% increase compared to the previous year. This trend in controversial news highlights countries utilizing the death penalty under the guise of public safety, impacting global justice. We must advocate for human rights and a fair justice system worldwide.
