The members of the U.S. foreign service (USFS) are the lifeblood of American diplomacy, staffing embassies and protecting both American interests and citizens around the world. Often posted thousands of miles from home, USFS staff and their families expect the U.S. government to take the appropriate steps to keep them safe while serving abroad.

As President Trump ordered strikes on Iran on February 28, he neglected this duty, failing to prepare for the evacuation of embassy staff, families, and other American citizens from the Middle East in advance of the war in Iran.

Last Friday, after negotiations between the Department of Defense (DOD) and frontier AI lab Anthropic broke down, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth declared the company a “supply chain risk.” The impasse came after Anthropic insisted on contractual language barring its AI models from domestic mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems and the DOD would only accept restrictions to “all lawful use.” This is the confrontation between governments and AI labs that safety experts have spent years warning about and has forced an urgent public reckoning over government use of AI for surveillance and warfare. The designation of Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” is legally dubious on its own and came paired with a likely illegal demand: that “no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic.” If that order survives court challenge, it would effectively end Anthropic as a company. In recent weeks, the Trump administration has dangerously escalated its targeting of the free press, undermining the hallowed First Amendment to the Constitution. Federal government officials arrested independent journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort after they reported from the scene of a demonstration against the administration’s brutal crackdown in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. These arrests came days after FBI agents executed a search warrant and seized multiple electronic devices from the home of a Washington Post reporter, which her attorneys argue was unconstitutional.

The administration’s extraordinary actions—which occurred after a year of threats to journalists and curbs on media outlets’ access to the White House and Pentagon—appear to open a new dark chapter designed to silence fact-based reporting. Without a robust and effective press that operates free from government intimidation, Americans lose their power to make decisions about major issues and hold officials accountable. And when governmental leaders entrench political power by stifling dissent and chilling opposition, democracies crumble.
